Helpful Tips and Instructions for your computer.

Making and saving a sign in Microsoft Word
(Your word processing program may be slightly different

Start your simple sign

  • Start
  • All Programs
  • Find your word processing program and click to open it
You should get a page that looks like a blank piece of paper.

Change page orientation and margins

  • File
  • Page setup
  • Landscape
  • Set side margins to less than 1 (one)
  • Okay

Changing the looks of the font (the print)
  • Highlight the word(s) you want to change
  • Format
  • Font
  • Select font size, name, color, boldness, underline, etc.
  • Okay
Always save your work! Why ?
  1. You will find an error on the printout.
  2. Your spouse will find an error on the printout
  3. Your coffee will spill on the printout.
  4. You will misplace the printout.
  • File
  • Save As
  • Select a name that is meaningful --a filing Word, description, date
    -- Computer doesn't like slashes
    -- Likes spaces and periods
-- Use temporary as the first word of the file name if you want to delete file without evaluating it later. (i.e. you know you won't want to keep it for very long -- maybe just until the event on the sign is over)

One way to find your word processed work again.
  • Start
  • All programs
  • Click on your word processing program
A new blank (hopefully) page will appear, but you want a SAVED page, SO:
  • File
  • Open
  • Look for your file's name, and double click on it toopen it

Reusing an old sign to create a new one.

(This is a shortcut to use until you are comfortable with the whole process. Do it with lists that you have learned to make in spreadsheets, too)

Open your old file, getting it on the screen.

  • File
  • Save as
  • Name it what you want for the new sign

Erase old words on the sign, and put new ones in. You won't have to change fonts, pictures, etc., although you may want to make some words smaller or larger (highlight, format, font)

BE SURE to Save it again after new sign is done.

BOTH your old and new signs will be saved under the different names you chose.

Skills mentioned in this lesson: margins, page orientation (portrait & landscape), font size, color, bold, type style, centering, highlighting, getting rid of highlighting, noticing task bar at bottom, and blue bar on top, edit-undo, saving, naming, saving under a second name to reuse the formatting of an earlier work, window, autoshapes on a drawing toolbar (view. Toolbars. Drawing), opening more than one file at a time using ctrl click or shift click.
