Creating Desktop Shortcut Icons There are two kinds of desktop shortcuts. One that brings up a program already on the hard drive, and one that brings up a website. When a program is installed on the computer, a desktop shortcut icon should appear on the desktop automatically. If it doesn't here's how to make one: CREATING SHORTCUT ICONS FOR PROGRAMS, FILES, OR FOLDERS ALREADY ON THE HARD DRIVE 1. Find the program by clicking the start button, and click on programs. You may have to hunt around a bit, but you should be able to find it this way. 2. Simply right click on the icon that runs the program, and from the pop up menu select send to, then click on desktop,(create shortcut). The program icon will now be on your desktop. You can also use this method to create a desktop shortcut to any folder or file on your hard drive. CREATING SHORTCUT ICONS FOR WEBSITES 1. Go to the website you want to make the shortcut for. For example: cnn.com, foxnews.com, yahoo.com. 2. When you're at the site you want, left click the name in the address field. It will turn blue. With the cursor still there, right click that address, and a menu box will open. Click copy. 3. Close the website and get back to your desktop. 4. Right click any open space on the desktop, and select new from the pop up menu. 5. Select shortcut, and another window will open telling you to type in the location of the item. Right click in that field, and select paste from the pop up menu. The website address is now pasted in the correct place. 6. Click the next button. You now give a name to the shortcut. It can be anything, for example: CNN News, Fox News, Yahoo, My Favorite Website, Cats, Dogs, etc. 7. Click Finish. You should now have a desktop icon that is a shortcut to that website.
